Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won India’s first medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Chanu won the silver medal in the woman category with a total lift of 202Kg. She becomes the second-ever Indian female weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic weightlifting medal. When Chanu was asked, “How hard did you work for this medal?” She replied “I have worked very hard and made many sacrifices. I had to take this medal in the Tokyo Olympics so I really sacrificed everything. I didn’t go home much because of the training. So I had done a lot of hard work to achieve this.”

Chanu Lifted 110Kg in her first attempt and executed it perfectly. In her second attempt, She went for 115Kg and lifted it successfully creating a new Olympics record. Chanu then attempted to lift 117Kg on her final but failed and settled for silver. China’s Hou Zhihui clinched the gold medal in the competition. Zhihui won the medal by lifting a total of 210Kg and setting a new Olympic record. Indonesia’s windy Cantika Aisah took home the bronze medal with a total lift of 194Kg. Overall, Chanu is the fifth ever Indian female athlete to have won an individual Olympic medal.

Mirabai Chanu’s Road to Redemption

Five Years ago, Mirabai Chanu’s world came crashing down in the 2016 Rio Olympics. She failed to pull off even one legal lift in Clean and Jerk and ranked 6th in the final. However, this year the young weightlifter from Manipur was determined to compensate for the setback of Rio.

Mirabai Chanu has waited very long and she has put every bit of hard work to achieve this success. Mirabai said in Press “I have been dreaming about this moment for the past 5 years to win a medal at the Olympics. I tried for gold but had to settle for silver. But I am very happy and for me, this is a really big achievement”. She has won the gold medal in the 2017 World Championship and 2018 Commonwealth Games. A lower back injury in 2018 ruled her out of competitions for much of the year. But she made a remarkable comeback by lifting over 200 Kg for the first time in her career at the 2019 World Championships. Chanu had said that she was going for Tokyo redemption. Mirabai also got facilitated by the Indian Army. The 26 year old was a top medal prospect for India at the Tokyo Games which got underway on July 23. The 2020 Olympics games are being held after a delay of 1 Year due to the covid 19 Pandemic. A 12 months’ wait has come to an end as Japan gets geared up to host the Tokyo 2020 Olympics behind closed doors amid big protests calling for the cancellation of the games amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic had pressured the primary-ever postponement of the Olympics ultimate year which is why the Olympics games have retained the Tokyo 2020 call no matter being performed in 2021.

In the run-up to the event, Chanu had put up a series of solid Performances having set up a new world record in the clean and jerk section. Mirabai also said “Every athlete dreams of winning a medal at the Olympics. All the players have the same dream. There have been many athletes who have won the Olympics medals in the past. I have also won the silver medal here and I am happy. I am very happy for India and also for my state Manipur”. Soon after her success, PM Modi tweeted a congratulatory message for the olympian”
